If you’re new to Jacksonville or just haven’t experienced Deck the Chairs yet, trust me – it’s a must. This annual event transforms lifeguard chairs into whimsical, oversized works of art, each one uniquely decorated and lit to perfection. It’s playful, creative, and full of local flair.
Kids love the lights and interactive displays, and adults appreciate the art and community spirit. Plus, it’s right by the beach, which gives it that only-in-Florida-in-December vibe. Bundle up (lightly), grab a hot chocolate, and take a stroll under the lights.

2. Avondale During Luminaria Night
One of the most magical nights of the year happens in Historic Avondale. Each December, the neighborhood glows with thousands of luminaria bags lining the sidewalks – simple white paper bags filled with sand and tea lights, lit up all at once at sunset.
Homes get decked out in lights, neighbors gather on porches with cider, and it feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie – but better, because it’s real. If you want to impress your guests (or just slow down and feel connected), this is the place.

3. Southern Grounds – Avondale
It’s not the holidays without a seasonal latte in hand, and Southern Grounds is my go-to spot for that cozy, coffeehouse energy. They rotate their seasonal drinks often – think brown sugar cinnamon, peppermint mocha, or rosemary caramel – and the atmosphere is the perfect mix of relaxed and festive.
It’s ideal for a quiet morning catch-up with family or a warm-up stop after browsing Avondale’s shops.

The ambiance alone feels like the holidays – dim lighting, rich wood tones, glowing candles, and perfectly plated dishes. It’s cozy, intimate, and consistently delicious.

5. Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
Sometimes the best way to reconnect during the holidays is to just take a walk in nature. I love the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens for that. It’s peaceful, uncrowded, and beautiful year-round – but there’s something especially serene about it in winter.
The trails wind around a lake, through gardens, and under tree canopies that are still green even when everything else feels dormant. It’s a great place to bring a cup of coffee, clear your head, or walk and talk with loved ones in town.

6. San Marco Square – Last-Minute Gifts Done Right
We’ve all been there – it’s the week before Christmas and you realize you forgot someone on your list. Enter San Marco Square. It’s full of charming boutiques, independent bookstores, and local shops where you can find thoughtful, unique gifts in a pinch.
