Depersonalizing Your Home before Selling

One of the best things you can do in order to sell your home quickly is to depersonalize it. A lot of people find it easier to move out and then sell their home for this very reason. However, if a full makeover is not an option, there is still a lot you can do to make your house seem more inviting to prospective buyers, so they can see it as their future new home rather than your home.


Think Neutral

All the colors in your home should be neutral enough to match with anything. In this way, prospective buyers won’t cross your home off their list mentally because they don’t like your taste in decorating. It’s always a good idea to freshen a home inside and out with a new paint job. If you have any walls in really dark colors, it may take two or three coats to lighten them, but will help your house sell faster.


Remove All Personal Items from the Walls


Since you are going to be painting anyway, now is a good time to take down all the family photos, certificates and so on. Remove nails, hooks, etc. and spackle over the holes before painting.


Wallpaper and Wood Paneling


Nothing dates a home like old wallpaper or 70s style wood paneling. Remove it, be sure the walls are smooth underneath, and then give everything a fresh coat of neutral paint.


Stencils and Borders


These should all be removed and the area painted over.




Buy coverings for your sofa and add matching throw pillows and curtains. It will give everything a fresh, clean, yet neutral look and you won’t need to worry about them not having the same taste in furnishing that you do.


Declutter Every Area


Donate it, give it away, sell it on eBay, have a garage sale… it’s up to you. The main thing is to get rid of anything you and your family haven’t used in the past year. Prospective buyers and property surveyors will want to see EVERY part of the house – from basement to attic and garage, so there will be no place to hide. Not even you closets and drawers will be safe from scrutiny.


Use Attractive Storage Solutions


You may have to continue living in the house for some time until you find a buyer, and will need to maintain a certain standard of cleanliness and attractiveness so you can show prospects around at a moment’s notice. Consider putting your most personal items into storage. If you can’t, find attractive bins, drawer sorters and so on so you will have a place for everything, and everything will be in its place.


Keep Your Bedrooms Immaculate


Don’t have your makeup strewn all over the vanity table, or hundreds of stuffed animals. If you have children, consider how old they are and what dÈcor is appropriate. They’ve probably grown out of Winnie the Pooh and might appreciate a fresher, more mature look.


Keep Your Bathroom Clutter Free


Avoid having lots of bottles of soap, shampoo and so on all over the place.


Watch Your Kitchen

The kitchen can be the most cluttered part of the house if you’re not careful. Take down fridge and wall art, stow away lots of small appliances, and make sure everything is cleaned to a shine.


If you’ve painted your kitchen in any unusual colors or opted for strangely-colored appliances like green or yellow, consider updating them with white or stainless.




Hide your pet beds and toys and don’t make them a huge talking point or allow them to run around your visitors. Be super-vigilant about cat litter boxes and other sources of odors.


Depersonalizing your home can be difficult emotionally and practically, but it can help you get a better price that much sooner.
